Welcome to BBC Xtra English . Today Finn and Sam talk about English spelling.
The Simplified Spelling Society wants to make spelling easier for learners by spelling everything phonetically i.e. as they sound.
In their campaign they turned up holding signs saying things like "Let's end the 'i' in friend". So the word will be 'F.R.E.N.D' but would still be pronounced like 'friend'.
They would spell 'learn' which is currently spelled L.E.A.R.N as L.E.R.N. They think spelling in English is unnecessarily complicated, and makes learning difficult.
The society says it takes a lot of time to teach English spelling and therefore costs more money.
But others say changing the current written material like books and websites, would also cost a lot of money.
English has so many loanwords from other languages like French and Latin. And some say by simplifying spelling we might lose some of that richness.
Others say richness doesn't matter to someone who is learning English as a tool for communication.
