Many people and organizations help with nature conservation, taking care of the plants and animals that live on the earth with us. Until the beginning of the 20th century, people thought we could conserve nature by putting wild animals in zoos, or by putting plants in botanical gardens. Now we understand that we must conserve plants and animals in their habitats (the natural places where they live),so that we can also protect their ways of life and all the variation within each species.
For example, individual polar bears can survive in cages in zoos. But to conserve the species properly, each polar bear needs hundreds of square kilometers of arctic snowfield to roam over naturally, hunting in unpolluted seas where there are no people to disturb them.
