The Future of Information in Education
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Technology is an important part of everyday life, but the main question is where it will take us in the future and how advanced will our life be. The first article that I came upon that discussed the future of education is written by Chris Dede. Dede mainly concentrates on the use of smart objects, where he states “Smart objects, with embedded microprocessors and wireless networking, explain their own functioning and help us create "articulate" educational environments that communicate with their inhabitants” (1995). He gives a good example of smart objects when he says to imagine when a child is in the classroom and they have to stack blocks from biggest to smallest. Let’s say the child picks up the wrong block, then with smart objects, the block could say something like “not me” and then the right block could blink and say “it’s me”. These smart objects could play a huge role in education with being able to help students with common errors that they have or even in the classroom where they could be helped with a math problem after the teacher explained it. This type of technology according to Dede, will be the wave of the future and will happen hopefully soon enough.
In the future, wouldn’t it be cool to be able to do a research paper while you are waiting to get a haircut? According to David Moursund, this will happen. In this second article about where technology in education is headed, the author states that in the near future every single students will have a microcomputer that will have all of the capabilities of a pc and more. Students will be able to do a paper, access the internet, and more with an extremely easy to use interface that provides students with the ability to do just about everything. The author also continues to say that artificial intelligence is going to be an incredible educational tool in the future because as computers are getting “smarter” humans are able to concentrate on different areas of their majors or fields of interest.
The third article I found came from an interview from an IT professor that is describing the future of information and technology in education. Oblinger, the interviewee, states that next steps in education may be the integration of knowledge management and e-learning systems to augment current practices. In the near future, online classrooms and internet based courses will be as ordinary as the classroom setting is now. Oblinger feels that this technology will take away from the teacher- student environment, but in time, it will be just as useful and effective as it is today. Basically, technology is rapidly advancing and it takes time for people to accept and adjust to the new changes, but over time, it will be a universal acceptance and will prove to be very valuable.
