Nowadays a world is a much smaller place than it ever was. People are traveling more and the number of people working and settling down in foreign countries, in search of better jobs or better living conditions, is increasing all the time. Therefore, there is a need to communicate effectively with people from different cultures in different languages. The world is becoming bilingual and knowing the second language is necessity. With companies growing globally and the outsearching of jobs, the work force finds itself having to interact with people from different countries everyday. Thus, people with knowledge of foreign language find themselves at a distinct advantage. Intercultural awareness in language learning is the ability to be aware of cultural relativity following reading, writing, listening and speaking. This essay will provide the definition of culture awareness and the ways to help us develop it
Cultural Awareness is the foundation of communication and it involves the ability of standing back from ourselves and becoming aware of our cultural values, beliefs and perceptions. Why do we do things in that way? How do we see the world? Why do we react in that particular way? Increasing cultural awareness means to see both the positive and negative aspects of cultural differences. Cultural diversity could be a source of problems, in particular when the organization needs people to think or act in a similar way. Diversity increases the level of complexity and confusion and makes agreement difficult to reach. On the other hand, cultural diversity becomes an advantage when the organization expands its solutions and its sense of identity, and begins to take different approaches to problem solving. Diversity in this case creates valuable new skills and behaviors.
