“The Iceman”
The Iceman was discovered by German hikers in the Italian Alps on September 19, 1991. The Iceman who was also known as “Otzi” is 5300 years old and he is considered to be the oldest frozen mummy ever found. At the beginning he was thought to be a modern corpse, but then the policemen discovered that he was an old mummy with a brownish color and leathery skin. Otzi was approximately 45 years old when he died and near to the place he was found a copper axe, a knife and arrows were found too.
A group of International forensic scientists and archaeologists investigated the cause of Otzi’s death and tried to answer other mysterious questions like who was this man and where did he come from? For that the Iceman mummy was stored in a refrigerator of 21 F temperature and 100% humidity. Scientists had to defrost him for 2 hours in order to take some samples. Defrosting was of high risk because microorganisms might quickly decompose the body. Samples were taken from dental enamel and intestines. Scientists also did a chest X-ray and a CT scan which suggested that there was an arrow head that went through the left shoulder blade from the back. Botanical scientists discovered two facts. Based on the material of his arrow and bow, botanical scientists traced his origin back to a specific area in northern Italy. They also found a certain type of plant pollen in his intestines and based on the distance these pollen travelled in his gut, they concluded that he spent his last 12 hours in that area. Furthermore, it became apparent to them that Otzi died in the late spring, more specifically in June. They also made a conclusion that he was a religious leader of his group based on the tattoos which were found in different parts of his body.
