Why Does America Hate Us?
It may be that a few years from now, when we look back at the September 11 attack on the United States, we will view it as the beginning of the end of Islamic radical fundamentalism, just as the 1967 Arab-Israeli war heralded the end of Nasserism and Arab nationalism. The reason for fundamentalism’s coming demise is what secular Arabs have been saying for years: Radical Islam has no social program for Arab or Muslim societies. All it can offer is death, destruction and revenge, none of which qualifies as a platform on which to build a future. The secular Arab view was long muffled by the din of the Muslim Brotherhood slogan “Islam Is the Solution.” The mother of all radical Muslim movements, the Brotherhood reigned supreme after 1967 on the otherwise politically vacuous Arab and Muslim landscape – until that fateful day of 9/11. When the World Trade Center came down, the proponents of civil society in every Arab country took center stage.
I don’t believe there has ever been a time when Muslim preachers have been under more pressure and scrutiny than they are now. Every day, liberal pundits demand in the press and on independent Arab satellite stations that they explain, defend and justify their militant messages of the past.
Osama Bin Laden’s epic act of terror may have put radical Islam on the road to ruin. But it has not yet put other Muslims on the road to salvation. That depends on the West working closely with Arab civil societies – something that has yet to occur.
The question now is whether the Western secular establishment will step in to help, instead of closing the doors to the very elements in Arab and Muslim societies that are natural allies. So far the answer is no.
