The History of Rasselas: Prince of Abissinia
Samuel Johnson the writer of the novella "The History of Rasselas" was born in England in September, 1709. He wrote this outstanding novel in one week in order to support his ill mother Sarah Ford. Unfortunately, his mother died while writing the book, so he spent the money he earned out of this book on her funeral. It is said that this story was an outcome of Johnson’s depression especially in the time of his mother illness.
"Rasselas" is a prince who lived a happy and sheltered life in the "Happy Valley". In the valley, he found all the caring, feeding and protection anyone would have dreamed of. However, Rasselas over the time got bored with all the caring he is getting in the valley and decided to look for happiness. Therefore, he escaped with his guide Imlac, his sister Princess Nekayah and her maid Pekuah. The travellers start the journey of exploring the world outside the valley in order to make a choice of life which will lead them to happiness. They leave with little jewellery and start to meet different kinds of people in an effort to find their happiness. During their journey, the group come to meet ordinary people, teachers, an astronomer, a wealthy man and many others. They discover that none of these people is living a happy life. Even the people the group thought are living happily complained about things in their life, and everyone is dissatisfied. In addition to that, the group came across some people who stole their money and took advantage of them. Even Princess Nekayah and her maid got kidnapped by desert raiders. Only then Rasselas discovered how difficult and harsh the ouside world is compared to Happy Valley and wondered how people can live happily in such cruel world.
The theme Johnson is highlighting in his story is that people who are desperately looking for happiness are the ones who will never find it. People should accept their life as it comes to them, and should not look for happiness because one day it will be lying in their hearts without them realizing. The conclusion the book is drawing is that no choice will bring you happiness in life because no one is satisfied, and happiness only comes after death when we’ll meet God who made us.
